To Whom It May Concern: OWNER of CATTERY: Adrian Tan
RE: Unethical and Irresponsible cat breeder in Singapore

This is a written warning to all parties or association or individuals concerning an unethical and unscrupulous practice of a cat breeder (Adrian Tan from Heaven Haven Cattery) in Singapore.

Following is the actual event and time where it happens. I strongly recommend that you read carefully and take whatever action necessary to ensure that this does not happen to you or your cats.

Sunday 30-06-2002 --1pmI made a trip down to the Cattery at T81 Seletar West Farmway 5 Singapore 798061 with the intention to purchase a healthy cat as a present to my wife. Upon reaching the farm at 1pm, I find myself looking at a huge farm with assorted animals. I asked the owner (Adrian Tan) to enquire if there is any cat for sale. He pointed me in one directions and one of the cat caught my eyes. I told him of my interest and that its a gift to my wife. I asked him about taking care of the cats and ect. He promptly rattles off with care of the cat and the temperament of this cat. Throughout the conversation, he stressed over a number of times that his cats are healthy and eating well. A layman like myself who only know how a cat is supposed to look like, decide to ask him if there's anything wrong the cat. He then stress again that his cat is healthy and eating well, when I asked him what is the green bit on the cats eyes, he told me that it is normal, eyes shit. I presume that he is right since he is in the business. Next I asked him about the sales agreement where it says, I quote Heaven Haven agrees to accept the return of the cat/kitten provided a medical report duly signed by the examining veterinarian confirming to have contracted a viral or bacterial infections within 24 hours of purchase. It is only applicable if you take your cat/kitten to our ! veterinary practice at: , He says, oh, normally I take responsibility only if it is within 24 hours, but sometimes, 48 or 72 hours also can. It is on that verbal agreement that I decided to take the cat. --2pm After much discussion on cats care and nutrition, I made payment for the cat with my credit card. I also asked him for the cats paper of which he says will be coming in. As we go through the item, he says I will need a medicated shampoo for the cat, ear mites solutions and vitamins. For precautions purpose. I also ask if I should take the cat to a Vet immediately, he says in the next day also can and anything wrong to give him a call. I proceed onto a cab and bring the cat home. On the way home, I noticed that the cat sneezes a couple of time. Reaching home, I release the cat from her cage, she sneeze a couple of time and I immediately call Adrian and asked him if it is normal if she sneezes. He says, Yes, its normal etc I presume that he is right and let the cat be since he says that cats are susceptible to stress and may sneeze but its normal. I then ask if I should bring her to a vet, he said to give it a day or so and see how.

Monday (01-07-2002) On Monday, I proceed to give the cat a bath as instructed by him and notice that she has bald spots and still sneezes. He said to give the cat vitamins and if not ok by Tuesday to go to the Vet. At this stage, I thought he knew more than I did and waited one more day. The cat still has eye shit.

Tuesday (01-07-2002) I had a hunch that something must be wrong as the cat by now has given off a strong smell and I decide to bring her to the Vet as specified by the Sales agreement. After examination of the cat, the Vet told me that she has fungus, flu and is very skinny. Symptoms: Redness under the eyelid, eye discharge (so called eye shit), sneezing and under UV light, greenish glow in the bald spots. I show the Vet the vaccination card of the cat and he says someone if is not doing his job as the cat in her first year has to be given at least 3 shots and she has been long overdue. First dose in card shows 25/01/2002, and the next dose in the card shows 23/02/2002. I paid for the medication for the cat although I know she must be returned. Fortunately I did so, as when I contact Adrian about this and inquire about the returning. He made good by convincing me that it is normal and that I have been told that all cats will have this. Also to add that he also threaten that he does not like to be called with regards to issue like this and stress that his cats are healthy and eating well. (Now I know why he kept saying that)

Wednesday (02-07-2002) I gave the cat eye drops and her medicine, and by Friday, I notice that there is no more eyes shit. This suggests that she is indeed sick when I brought her.

Saturday (06-07-2002) 7:30 pm I decide to give Adrian a call and ask for a refund. Upon reaching him on his mobile, I said, Adrian, your cat is sick when I brought her and I wish to make a refund. At this, he starts with a bunch of excuses and then when I stress the refund request. He promptly changes his tone and says, I don't like to talk about this, and I don't want to talk to you, go and make a case! At this he hangs up. I am sure by now you are quite clear about what has happen here. As a cat breeder, I find him to be very irresponsible in caring of the cats. When I brought the cat, she was caged together with 3 other cats. As far as I know, cat flu is contagious to other feline and so is the ringworm fungus. Cat flu if left untreated can lead to death in cats. It seems that the well being of the cats is not important to him and his idea is to sell the cat quickly and make a profit. With regards to the following up, he claims that he is very concern with the cat new home and I have never received any phone call from him inquiring about the cat. If he is as good as he claims, I'm sure he know that the cat is sick and have flu. To think of it, no wonder he keep saying that cats can be stressful in a new environment and may catch flu. As a businessman, I find him to be very unethical. He knowingly sold off a sick cat infected with ringworm (which can be spread to human!) and down with cat flu. But I must also add that he is a very good with words as he made me believe that it is normal. He is very unscrupulous, as he knows that once I exceed the 24 hours, I cant return the cat to him. Therefore, he told me to call him first and not go to the Vet first until I speak to him. If he does not know that his cat is sick, then I strongly suggest that he don't sell cats. Another Pet shop in Frankel Ave, which I went to, warned me which animal is sick and will refuse to sell them. Bottom line, if you are a breeder, I shall warn you of his method of business. If you are a potential customer, beware. The only person in my opinion who should purchase any animal from him is Vets or pet experts as he is very good with words. If you are from any agency, I would strongly suggest that you make a check at his farm and ensure that he does not start off any epidemic with his method of selling sick animals. Every time, I have an itch, I would wonder if its the ringworm. It is a very cruel act that he neglects the animal well being by leaving the cat sick. It is very irresponsible that he did not quarantine the sick cat and left her with other cats. If I am an irresponsible owner, I would have thrown the sick cat out of the house, and cause more strays and help spread diseases. It is very rude of him as a person to hang up the phone. He does not strike me as someone that can take care of a business and let alone the animals at his farm.
