Forged Checks Deposited in My Bank

Gainesville, Florida, 32609

I had put an add on Craigslist for home maintenance and light cleaning. The following day I had several replies and they were willing to pay in advance,I had been out of work and this was good news I thought.Well the first two checks came via UPS followed by immediate emails with instructions to take these to my bank cash them take my fee out and forward to another place which was given by email.I followed the instructions not even thinking anything was wrong. Meanwile my bank contacted me and told me the checks I cashed were forged documents and now I am responsible to repay the bank at least $5000.00 because it caused other checks I had written from the same account were returned for non sufficient funds, now besides owing the bank now i owe the other merchants as well, meanwhile more checks from other people came about every other day.So i decided to keep the others and all correspondence with any of them.So I could report this to the police.I was shocked when I was denied to even see a detective.i couldn't believe it.I am trying to find answers how i can rectify this with no Income with disability .I'm hopeful to get this behind me it is eating me up to be so nieve.any advice please? Thank you Mike

I'm so sorry to hear you were scammed Mike. Unfortunately this is not a new scam. Many times this type of scam is used to purchase cars and other items listed for sale on Craiglists and online. Most of these originate from Nigeria. Nigeria seems to be the land of the scammers, although not always from there. Sometimes it is forged checks, other times forged money orders. NEVER accept a check or money order for more than the price of the item or service. And NEVER give them more money back. Sadly Mike I don't think there is much you can do to get your money back. Good luck and please keep spreading the word about these types of scams.
