Bank Deposit Scam

Chonburi, none

This is what he wrote to me.

Greetings,

Thanks for getting back to me through the email, I believe that communicating through the email will make for a better understanding as well as give confidentiality to this important information which I am about to tell you. Let our communication be only through the email for security reasons. My name is Amaan Mohammed, I am a banker and I currently work as the operations manager of my bank branch. In February 2004 when I was working as a marketing staff, I was approached by one Ms. Marie Flores, a Filipino who asked me to help her open a fixed deposit bank account with the reason that she lacked a work Thailand work permit which would have ordinarily qualified her to open such a bank account with us. I helped her open a fixed deposit bank account where she deposited the sum of five hundred and forty five thousand United dollars (US$545,000). Ever since the deposit was made, no other transaction took place in the bank account and the deposit has been a source of revenue for our bank for so many years now. However, there is a new financial law that requires all abandoned (dormant) deposits exceeding 10 years to be transferred to the government's bank account and this literally means the forfeiture of such deposits to the government. I have tried calling Ms. Marie Flores to alert her on the state of her deposit and the need for her to come for the claim of her deposit or have her bank account activated and her phone number could not be reached, letters I sent to her address were not replied and emails I sent to her kept bouncing back as undelivered.

As a concerned staff, I went further to ask about her whereabouts and I realized that she died early 2005 while on vacation in Chonburi Province as a result of heart related illness. Our bank is not aware of her death even at this moment because no one has officially notified our bank of her death. When I went to her residential address here in Thailand, everyone that knew her confirmed she was dead. I inquired from the registrar of deaths at Chonburi province where she died, her death was registered and I acquired a xeroxed copy of her death certificate but still there was no known relative of her. I went to the Philippine embassy here in Thailand and I was informed that they had no records of her. Lastly, I made efforts despite my tight budget to visit the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) office in Manila as well as the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Quezon City to ask about her details. At the DFA, I was informed that her purported Philippine passport number could not be found anywhere in the DFA's records and the at the PSA, I was told her names and date of birth did not match any of their records. All these made it impossible for me to locate any of her relatives.

I am sure that you have started wondering why I am telling you all these. Well, it is because I want to offer you this inheritance opportunity to stand her beneficiary. Yes, I want you to apply for the claim of the money from our bank as her friend, we will share the money into two equal parts between the both of us when the claim made. I understand that a beneficiary to a deposit like this is not limited to the relations of the deceased. Rather it is a choice by the depositor as to who she wishes to have as her beneficiary. This means that his business partner, relation, kinsman, friend or a well-wisher can be her beneficiary since he died without leaving a beneficiary to the deposit she made. If this will in any manner or form endanger your position and reputation, I would not have contacted you, this is safe and beneficial to both of us financially. It is better we make the claim rather than leaving it to end up in the hands of few corrupt government officials who will still use it for their own personal benefits. It does not matter if you knew her or not, it does not matter if you had any kind of relationship with her or not. It is not a matter of being greedy, we are not hurting anyone by making this claim.

You are not going to come to Thailand to make this claim, you will start and conclude the claim while in the comfort of your home and country, I will be here to guide you as until the claim is completed, there is nothing to be worried about. With the way our bank works, it is only someone outside of Thailand that can successfully make the claim from our bank and that is the reason why I have come to you for help. I have all the copies of documents relating to the deposit she made that you will file to back up your claim as her beneficiary. If you are willing to do this with me, write back and I shall inform you on what next to do to make sure you receive the money. If on the other hand you have no interest in this inheritance opportunity, inform me so I will immediately look for someone else who will make the claim with me. Thank you and God bless you.

Yours sincerely,
Amaan Mohammed.
